Buy S4S (surfaced 4 sides) boards — they arrive flat, square, and ready to cut. No planer or jointer needed.
Let boards acclimate indoors 48 hours before cutting. Solid wood moves with humidity — rushing this causes gaps later.
For the back panel, use ¼" Baltic birch plywood — not MDF. Lighter, stiffer, holds screws better.
Home Depot carries Red Oak and Hard Maple S4S boards. For Walnut and Cherry, check a local lumber yard or hardwood dealer.
Buy 10–15% more than the cut list calls for. The Material tab already includes a waste factor, but real boards have knots and defects to work around.

Each vertical divider is two short stubs — top and bottom thirds — with the middle left open. Cut each divider board into two pieces.

01Buy S4S solid wood in your chosen species. Select straight-grained, knot-free boards. Let them acclimate indoors 48 hrs before cutting.
02Mark cut lines with a speed square. Clamp boards to the Worx Pegasus using the built-in quick clamps. Cut to dimension with the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 6-1/2" saw + Diablo 60T blade.
03Sand all pieces to 120 grit before assembly. Always sand with the grain on solid wood — never across it.
04Cut each vertical divider into two equal stubs (top + bottom thirds), leaving the middle as open gap.
05Drill pocket holes with Kreg 720PRO. Set jig to ¾" and use 1-1/4" coarse-thread screws. Drill on inside faces — they'll be hidden.
06Apply Titebond III to mating surfaces. Attach side panels to top & bottom — use Bessey REVO parallel clamps to pull joints tight. Wipe squeeze-out with a damp cloth immediately.
07Install horizontal shelf dividers with pocket holes + glue, evenly spaced. Check square with a speed square before clamps set.
08Fit vertical stubs into each cell — glue top stub to shelf above, bottom stub to shelf below. Worx clamp dogs hold them in place while glue dries.
09Rip two French cleat strips from ¾" plywood scrap at 45° with your circular saw. One strip mounts inside the shelf top; one screws into wall studs.
10Sand assembled shelf to 220 grit. Wipe down with a tack cloth.
11Apply 3 coats Minwax wipe-on poly (satin) with a lint-free cloth. 2–3 hrs between coats. Light 220 scuff after coat 1. No sanding after final coat.
12Use Empire 48" level to mark level line on wall. Use Franklin M210 to locate studs. Drive wall cleat with GRK 3" screws — minimum 2 studs. Hang shelf.

Safety glasses — ANSI Z87.1 rated, side-wrap. ~$12. Wear every single time the saw runs. No exceptions.
Hearing protection — foam earplugs or 3M Peltor earmuffs (~$5–25). IEMs with foam tips work too — silence only, nothing playing through them.
N95 mask or 3M 6502 respirator — oak & maple dust is fine and lingers in the air. Essential when cutting or sanding indoors or on a balcony. ~$15–35.
Gloves — for handling rough lumber and finishing only. Never wear loose gloves while operating the circular saw.
Shop vac / M18 PACKOUT Wet/Dry Vac — connect to saw's dust port. Catches the majority of chips at the source. A canvas drop cloth under the Worx Pegasus catches the rest.
Balcony — viable if sheltered from wind. Use a drop cloth + shop vac. Check with building management about noise hours.
Building parking garage / lot — best apartment option. Concrete floor, wind protection, close to home.
Friend's driveway or garage — ideal. Weather protection and room to spread out.
Home Depot / Lowe's cut service — $0.25–0.50/cut. Have them crosscut boards in-store. Do all assembly (pocket holes, glue, clamps) indoors with almost zero dust.
Local makerspace — ~$20–30 day pass. Full dust collection, workbenches, and experienced members nearby.
